ZURICH, Switzerland (AFP) -- FIFA warned on Wednesday that Salvadoran referees selected for the World Cup next month could be excluded due to a dispute over government interference in El Salvador's football.
World football's governing body said in a statement that its emergency committee had voted on Tuesday to suspended El Salvador's football association (FESFUT) "on account of government interference".
It warned that the suspension could be finalised by FIFA's ruling executive committee and congress "if the Salvadoran authorities do not revise their position by noon (GMT) on 8 June 2010", a week before the kick-off of ther World Cup in South Africa.
Since FIFA's members would only hold their next meeting a year later the decision would be irreversible at least until then.
"Furthermore, during the period of suspension, FESFUT will not be able to be represented in any regional or international competitions," the statement added.
"For example, the refereeing trio selected for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa will not be able to participate in this competition if FESFUT remains suspended."
The trio are referee Joel Aguilar and his assistants William Torres and Juan Zumba.
The dispute revolves around FIFA's attempts at "normalisation" of the Salvadoran football association and approval by authorities in the central American nation. | | | | Reads : 72 |
